The joint venture team of Gilbane | Turner, in association with HOK, have been selected for the design and construction of a new Life Sciences Public Health Laboratory that will consolidate operations currently spread out across several Capital Region facilities. These three industry leaders have joined forces, sharing synergy, best practices, and philosophy to create this dynamic and important facility. We are very excited to create this standard-setting Life Sciences Public Health Laboratory.

About the New York State Life Sciences Public Health Laboratory

The Life Sciences Public Health Laboratory project consolidates five existing facilities throughout the Capital District of New York into one new building on the Governor W. Averell Harriman State Office Building Campus in Albany, New York. This new facility will be home to NYS Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center, which includes the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, Division of Genetics, Division of Infectious Diseases, and Division of Lab Quality Certification. In addition to the laboratory space needed for the advancement of the Department of Health’s mission, the building will include a central utility plant, a shipping, storage, and material handling facility, and administrative offices.

The anatomy of the planned 655,600-square-foot building will include:

  • Shallow spread footing foundations
  • Steel braced frame five-story superstructure
  • Aluminum plate and glass façade
  • Various roofing systems, including KEE Type, and SBS
  • Gypsum wallboard partitions and architectural finishes
  • Mechanical and electrical systems to support laboratory operations
