(February 1, 2024) The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) today announced the completion of the $42 million project to renovate SUNY New Paltz’s Awosting Hall.

The renovations, which among other things, added approximately 16,000 square feet of student living space through a newly constructed, steel framed, fourth floor, were completed in time for students to move in for the Spring semester. The construction firm on this project was Consigli Construction.

“DASNY is proud to partner with SUNY New Paltz to provide students with a significant update to an important SUNY New Paltz facility,” said DASNY Vice President, Charlie Williams. “The modern and environmentally sustainable upgrades to Awosting Hall will offer students a more attractive and comfortable living environment for many years to come.”

DASNY oversaw a full gut renovation of the 56-year-old residence hall to create an integrated living and learning environment with contemporary features. All student rooms were reconfigured to provide suite-style housing. Bedroom suites in the hall (singles, doubles, triples) have been reconfigured to provide new suite/bedroom layouts with lounge spaces, and all suite bathrooms were remodeled to provide private showers and new fixtures. New furniture was acquired cost-effectively through DASNY’s purchasing department.

To enhance the student experience, study areas and the two-story lounge were updated with new wall textures, energy efficient lighting and furniture. Two technology rooms were incorporated into the lower level, along with a kitchenette and laundry room. The renovations also included the installation of upgraded mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protections.

Energy Efficient

This project was constructed to achieve LEED-Silver certification standards under the U.S. Green Building Council’s sustainability and energy efficiency guidelines. Some of the LEED elements include energy-saving LED lighting and water-efficient plumbing fixtures to reduce indoor water usage. Currently, 49 DASNY projects have received LEED Certification, with another 15 projects in the pipeline.

This project was financed through DASNY’s SUNY Dormitory Facilities Program, which issues low-cost, tax-exempt bonds supported by student residence hall fees. It is the fourth in a series of major renovations DASNY has completed in the Peregrine Complex at SUNY New Paltz. Construction has begun on the fifth and final residence hall renovation project at Mohonk Hall.

As of March 31, 2023, the end of the last fiscal year, DASNY was managing $519 million of projects for the SUNY system.

SUNY New Paltz President Darrell P. Wheeler, said, “High-quality residential life is so important to overall student success. Awosting delivers on this goal, and we’re thrilled that this 56-year-old building has been upgraded and will enhance the student living experience. I extend sincere thanks to our project partners at DASNY, to outside experts with various design and construction firms, and to the many colleagues across campus whose commitment to this space and to our students fueled a successful renovation that will support student well-being for years to come.”
